Wellness Tourism - 14 Oct 2011
2020 and Beyond
If we only had a crystal ball, how would we imagine spa and wellness resorts of the future to be? Personally, I think there will be a real shift towards integrated centres offering yoga and psychological therapy alongside facials and body maintenance products but the key will be in the calibre of professionals in such centres (I'm not sure we have really come of age yet in Ireland in terms of having a truly accessible wellness centre).
Wellness Tourism Worldwide (WTW) recently published two reports on what trends might shape the industry. Data was collected from 140 stakeholders representing wellness, tourism, spa and healthcare sectors in over 50 countries worldwide so we get a global and comprehensive viewpoint. Wellness hotels and resort spas are forecasted
to become the most popular wellness tourism product in several important continents and regions by 2020 including: Africa, South America, Central America, Australia and New Zealand. Spirituality remains dominant in Asia. In Central and Eastern Europe, therapeutic services and treatments are mainly based on the availability of natural assets (e.g. thermal waters) and will stay/or become the most important.
Products that will be available globally and will lose their differentiating qualities by 2020 include beauty treatments, massage of any kind, sauna of any kind, day-spas, and some spiritual practices (e.g. yoga or meditation). Regarding certain new or fusion/crossover products and services, there is a clear need for further research: many respondents to the survey were not familiar with alternative therapies, fusion treatments, or new products such as wellpitals or medhotels.

Seasonal Skincare - 01 Oct 2011
Top Tips from Aromatherapy Associates
I've been fortunate enough to meet Geraldine Howard, the Co-Founder of Aromatherapy Associates, Geraldine Howard, and she has great, natural looking skin which is a testament to the Aromatherapy Associates range of products. Happy so to pass on her skincare tips as we move deeper into autumn and towards a cold Irish winter.
“As we move through the seasons, it’s important to adapt your skincare regime accordingly as the climate dramatically affects the state of the skin. As you begin to have to wear thicker clothing and deal with colder weather, the skin can become more temperamental, generally dehydrated and more sensitive. Here are my top tips to help keep your face and body looking super radiant as we move into autumn.” Geraldine Howard, August 2011.
Tip 1: Once a week, apply a layer of products to the face and body before bed. Begin on the face, with a serum, facial oil and moisturiser. If your skin is feeling dry and generally looking a little lacklustre, also apply a mask as an additional layer under the moisturiser to seal in the goodness. Then, layer a body gel, body oil and cream over the whole body. Wrap yourself in loose bed clothing and leave to absorb overnight. You’ll notice an immediate benefit.
Tip 2: Get into the habit of looking after the skin as well in the winter as you do all summer. Whilst not as many areas of skin are on show, the better condition you keep your body in throughout the year, the easier it will be when you do wear dresses or sleeveless items in the colder weather.
Tip 3: The circulation can be more sluggish in the winter, so it’s important to incorporate massage into your daily routine to keep a radiant complexion. Rather than viewing cleansing as just removing make up each evening, consider it an opportunity to perform a mini-treatment on the whole face. Carry out lots of small circular movements as you apply the product – this is an invaluable way to boost capillary circulation, helping to remove impurities and generate radiant, healthy skin.
Tip 4: I recommend a full body exfoliation at least once a week, and the same for the face. But always be conscious of which of your products actually contain a form of exfoliation, so that you don’t overdo it. One of the biggest causes of premature aging is over exfoliation of the skin, which causes inflammation.
Tip 5: If you wear a hat in the cooler months, hair can get very dry and become static. Treat it weekly with a nourishing hair oil, massing into the scalp through to the ends of the hair.
There you go, sensible advice anyone can follow.

Back to Basics - 15 Aug 2011
Advice from Anni Hood at K.I.S.
K.I.S. stands for Keep It Simple which is the new lifestyle group founded by my friend Anni Hood and which provides services to "assess, guide and recommend the best possible proactive health routes for clients". In this months edition of European Spa Anni gives some really sound - and simple - advice to spa owners and we thought it would be good to share that advice.
1. Establish the break-even point of your business
2. Work out the margins on your various services
3. Manage your customers - CRM is key
4. Offer value and flexibility in what you do
These might sound obvious but we know it's easy to get caught up with the day to day of running a spa and to forget to review strategy and customer management. For more check out K.I.S.

We are grateful yet again to Susie Ellis at spafinder.com for keeping us in the loop on the latest from the Global Spa Summit which took place recently in Bali.

Global Spa Summit - 23 Jun 2011
New Board Member - Philippe Bourguignon
The Global Spa Summit (GSS) has recently announced that Philippe Bourguignon, Vice Chairman of Revolution Places, a division of investment firm Revolution LLC, has been appointed to the organization’s Board of Directors. In addition to helping steer the future directions of the leading annual conference for the global spa and wellness industries, he has been named Co-Chair of the next Summit, scheduled for June 4-6, 2012 in Aspen, Colorado.
As an attendee at two of the Summits, I can vouch for the relevance of this organisation which strives to provide a voice for the global spa industry and which also drives the standards consistently upwards. It's always good to see fresh Board inputs, particularly from someone as experienced as Bourguignon. As Vice Chairman of Revolution Places and CEO of both Revolution Places Development and a top-rated U.S. spa/wellness resort, Miraval, he is recognized worldwide as a leader in the creation of new models of health and wellness tourism. Prior to joining Revolution he served as co-CEO of the Davos-based World Economic Forum for two years, the very institution the GSS is, in part, modeled after.
June at Carton House - 15 Jun 2011
Mini Retreat Spa Package
I was lucky enough to enjoy a stay at Carton House this month and it was truly wonderful. The occasion was a family affair, my Mum's 75th birthday; it's always tough trying to please three generations but Carton managed to keep everyone happy. A fantastic setting, even better with the glorious June bank holiday sunshine; friendly and professional staff who actually look like they enjoy their work; an excellent dinner in the Linden Tree Restaurant; spacious, light-filled bedrooms and of course the spa.
During June you can enjoy exceptional value with the Spa Mini Retreat Package. For just €70.00 you can indulge in an hour of relaxation with an Elemental Facial (a personalised treatment which is designed to restore balance through the use of essential oil aromas). Also included is a massage tailored to suit your needs. Note, this price does not include accommodation or meals but you will be pleasantly surprised at the excellent value offered at Carton House, especially on Sunday nights.
Voya - 01 Jun 2011
International Success for Irish brand
It's great to see the nice people from Voya really begin to succeed in international markets. The Burj Al Arab in Dubai recently announced a new spa partnership with Voya which sees the Assawan Spa introduce the Irish seaweed bath to clients in the Middle East. Guests can try Voya's Organic Seaweed Hot Stone Massage & Foot Retreat, and the Irish experience is the only organic treatment on offer in the spa.
The Jumeirah-owned hotel deal adds Dubai to a list which includes the Six Senses in Paris and the Berkeley Spa in London so Voya is truly expanding its global footprint, which is great news for CEO Mark Walton and his team and which is richly deserved recognition for their hard work promoting the brand. We lucky Irish don't need to travel to Dubai though, just head to Strandhill Baths in Sligo for a real seaweed bath experience or try out some of the Voya treatments in our Spa Ireland spas (you can use our advanced search and tick Voya to find them).

Spafinder Trends for 2011 - 01 Mar 2011
Extreme Beauty, Maple Scrubs, Groupons....
In January we gave you the heads up on the Top 3 Spa Trends for 2011 from Susie Ellis at Spafinder and it would be remiss of us not to give you the lowdown on the remaining 7 trends for the year.
4. SPA BRANDWAGON
The spa industry is moving rapidly in the direction of branded experiences. The year of 2011 will be a watershed year for franchised/branded spas, as consumers seek the consistency of treatments they know and love, and major players expand into new markets. Globally, choose from the cool, urban Bliss or Exhale or the eco-luxury of Six Senses, or the lavish opulence of Mandarin Oriental. Here at Spa Ireland we wouldn't be a bit surprised to see A Sanctuary open in Ireland, it's about time we had one.
5. DEALS GONE WILD
Gone are the days when coupons were unfashionable things people snipped out of the newspaper and spas wouldn’t think of using the term “deal.” Well, put an “e-” or “group” in front of “coupon,” and you suddenly have the Internet mania of 2010, poised to accelerate at an even more dizzying pace in 2011. Online group-buying deals have burst onto the global scene, and the old-fashioned “deal” has morphed into a hip online industry. Citydeal.ie is the big player here in Ireland and expect to see even more discounted deals as the year progresses but there may be some truth in Spafinders predictions of 'deal fatigue' and a preference for customers to stick with a regular appointment at their favourite spa.
6. THE SCIENCE OF SPA
Is there scientific proof that massage reduces stress? Are mudpacks and mineral-baths medically proven to alleviate pain? The answer, in many cases, is increasingly “yes.” Get ready for a new era where more questions about the effectiveness of spa therapies will be asked, as the emphasis on evidence-based medicine and the “science behind spa” heats up.
7. HYPER-LOCAL SPAS
A current trend that complements the move toward branded spas is the desire for authenticity and immersion in the traditions and elements of a spa’s local environs and culture. A maple scrub in Canada, organic food from the spa garden, or facilities built of local stone, while not new, were, until relatively recently, novelties. But spas are now trending with the “farm-to-table” movement, offering farm-to-massage-table treatments. Locally sourced fruits, herbs and honey are grown on site, and then dished up in both meals and in spa treatments. Even the well-known branded spas are sure to reserve a portion of their services for locally infused treatments, as consumers look to take advantage of the diversity of their surroundings. We've said it before, we think this is ideal for Ireland and would love to see some spas getting creative with integrated activities, especially given the stunning location of many Irish spas.
8. EXTREME BEAUTY: SPA EDITION
The common element in spa beauty these days is that beauty-seekers are taking it to the max. We are far beyond Botox®; stem-cell facials and plasma therapy (yes, that’s where blood is drawn and re-injected) are new buzzwords.
But let’s also look at extreme pain, which people are tolerating more and more as long as it delivers results. Derma-rolling hurts, chemical peels can be uncomfortable and the zapping of lasers is no picnic. And facials aren’t just for faces anymore; now they are being applied to every extremity, including “booty” and “vagina” facials (yep, that thought just made me cross my legs firmly). Then there are boot camps, Rolfing and Bikram yoga, where pain meets pleasure. Even organic and natural products are being taken to the extreme, with raw food cuisine gaining popularity during intense detox retreats. Finally, what might be considered the most interesting extreme: People seem to be able to partake in both the "yin" of the natural and the "yang" of science and invasive cosmetic procedures at the same time. In the end, what people demand are extreme results, and they’re happy to pay the price for it: A staggering $679 billion annually, by far the largest share of the estimated $1.9 trillion wellness market.
9. SPA, IN A NEW YORK MINUTE
“In a New York minute” is jargon for how things move faster in hectic New York City. It’s also the name of a suite of mini (15- to 30-minute) spa treatments (designed to be performed simultaneously by multiple therapists) at the new Auriga Spa at The Setai Fifth Avenue (NYC). In our stressed-out, 24/7 world, we seem to be morphing into New Yorkers. The spa industry is responding, helping people spa anytime and offering “sample” and simultaneous treatments. In the US, a 9 p.m. closing time is the new spa norm, and “open late” now means midnight, 2 a.m. or all night. The trend is also towards earlier: For instance, most major Las Vegas spas (i.e., Canyon Ranch SpaClub, Qua Baths at Caesars Palace or Hard Rock’s Rock Spa) open at 5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m., while the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, London, opens at 7 a.m. This attracts both business people jumpstarting their day and revelers calling it a night.
10. SURPRISING SPECIAL EVENTS
Increasingly, spas are developing distinctive specialty programmes to draw patrons seeking a unique group experience. While destination spas have been offering yoga and healthy cooking weeks for years, retreats now span everything from a high-flying “Trapeze Experience” to a creative jewelry-making class to the more sober and grounded gathering for survivors of loss (these options have yet to hit Irish shores and we're not sure about the trapeze experience but who knows?.
What is clear is that spas will need to be increasingly creative and authentic in the delivery of spa packages and treatments. We're in for a tough year economically and a spa treatment that works out at a euro a minute needs to deliver the goods. And in case you're wondering, our pic is from VIVINLINEA SPA in New York, "Unique Science For Body Reshaping."

Spa Trends for 2011 - 20 Jan 2011
Top 3 Trends from Spafinder
We always like to see what Susie Ellis from Spafinder predicts for the Spa year to come, and she is usually spot on. Admittedly, she takes the global view - her report is based on analyses from a large team of experts who visit hundreds of day and stay spas each year; interviews with top industry analysts; ongoing research across the spa, travel and beauty sectors; and data derived from SpaFinder’s relationships with over 9,000 spas and salons across the globe. Ireland doesn't always get keep pace but see what you think of the Top 3 Trends for 2011.
Baby boomers are the fastest-growing demographic in the world. In the U.S. alone, 39 million consumers account for nearly $2 trillion in annual spending. This is not lost on spas, which are showing ever-more awareness of the needs of older spa-goers. Modeling after pioneers such as Canyon Ranch, many spas are now beginning to incorporate exercise physiologists, chiropractors, orthopedics and naturopaths who focus on rejuvenation of joints, pain relief and mobility. Thermal bathing is seeing a renaissance, particularly with this growing group, as the benefits of soaking – or santias per acqua – are rediscovered.
But woe is the spa that attempts to label this active, and often affluent, demographic. The days of “over 65” as a catchall category will soon become ancient history. After all, there’s a huge difference between a 70-year-old who plays tennis three times a week and an 85-year-old seeking pain relief. Forward-thinking examples: Fairmont’s Willow Stream Spas; Scandinave and Le Nordic models in Canada; and the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun in Japan.
2. ALL EYES ON ASIA
Asia has had a profound impact on the spa industry: Yoga, Thai massage, Ayurvedic medicine and acupuncture are staples on many spa menus, and the “Zen” nature of Asian design can be seen in spas worldwide. But historically, it’s been a tale of the mass exportation of Asian spa influences. Now a powerful new story is unfolding: The explosive growth of hotel/spa development within Asia (a market of 4.1 billion people), especially within the two fastest-growing world economies, China and India. These markets and others are developing at a breakneck pace, unleashing extraordinary new class mobility and massive opportunities for hotel/spa development. Consider just two facts: Asia-Pacific has the largest number of spas and hotels under development of any region in the world, and by 2015, China will have 100 million outbound travelers, many seeking a luxury lifestyle that includes a Westernized spa experience.
Stay tuned as the new “Spa Road” runs from China to India and beyond, and hotel/spa developers look to please both tourists seeking authentic ambiance and indigenous treatments and local spa-goers looking for Western-style spa-going. Keep your eye on: Starwood Hotels & Resorts, 60+ hotels in China and 86 in the pipeline; Marriott International, 89 new hotels in India by 2015; Mumbai-based Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces, 47 luxury resorts in the pipeline.
3. SALT ROOMS AND SALT CAVES
Healing traditions that involve basking in salt caves or water may be centuries old, but they are truly coming of age in some of the most modern spas. The benefits to skin, breathing and rejuvenation are making salt therapy – or halotherapy – one of the hottest trends to watch in 2011. More than folk tradition is behind the spa-salt resurgence: Clinical trials reveal it’s beneficial for respiratory illnesses like asthma, considered a global epedemic, and skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. Spas are finding stylish new ways to recreate the natural salt cave microclimate, infusing salt and negative ions into the air. Some examples have encrusted, stalactite-drenched grottoes (comprised of tons of imported Himalayan salt crystals). With decreased need of a therapist’s involvement, the treatments are attractive to spas from a cost side. Bottom line is that salty is sweet for spas and consumers in the coming year. For a healthy dose of salt, see: 1,000-plus traditional Eastern European salt caves/spas; CastaDiva Resort (Lake Como, Italy); and Salt Therapy Health & Wellness Center (Ontario, Canada). Our pic for this story is from the Dead Sea Salt Grotto in Rogner Bad Blumau in Austria.
As Ireland's baby boomers all grow up we will be watching out to see what our spas do to meet the needs of this growing demographic. More trends to come soon so watch this space.

New Year Tips From Elemis
New Year is a great time to kick-start a new detox regime and help your skin and body recover from all the festivities.
Here are a few words of wisdom from the professionals at the Elemis day-spa in London.
“Elemis Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow is the ultimate exfoliation ritual to rid the build up of dry skin during the winter. I love this time of year as I have more time to re-create my ‘spa at home’ treatments and you can guarantee that I will be massaging this all over my body. I love how the sea salt effectively removes dry skin and you feel cleansed knowing the lime peel purifies the skin so you feel as if you’re getting a real treat in the comfort of your own home. Plus the intoxicating smell whisks you away from cold, dreary January weather to somewhere altogether more exotic, I love it!“
Angela Kwakwa, Spa Manager
“At this time of year I’m very conscience to get my body ‘detoxed’. Christmas and New Year is always a time when I like to indulge on Christmas treats and there’s never a time when you have can have too many mince pies! However,
I need to watch my figure for my forthcoming wedding, so January is the perfect time to start. Cellutox Herbal Bath Synergy Sachets help cleanse my body and boost my sluggish system. With the powerful detoxifying Algae, Sea-buckthorn and Sea Fennel Extracts I can have my own relaxing treatment bath in the comfort of my own home and be ready for my wedding in no time.” Sarah Cole, Assistant Spa Manager
